Hodder Valley Show

Saturday 14th September 2024

Newton in Bowland

Cattle

Since the Cattle Section was opened to entries outside the Hodder Valley over 30 years ago, it has steadily grown over the years, from 40 cattle which was mainly dairy to now over 100 head, around half dairy: half beef cattle.

It’s the variety of breeds we are now seeing at the show which is a showcase in itself.

Dairy breeds exhibited include Holstein, Jersey, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Dairy Shorthorns.

Beef breeds exhibited include Beef Shorthorns, Charolais, Hereford, British Blues, Limousins and the commercial cross-bred animals.

We are very proud of our spectacular Young Handler's Competition in both the dairy and beef section which usually attracts into the teens of handlers and their animals.

Sheep

Equally well supported, the Sheep section boasts over 300 sheep shown with classes for Pure Swaledale, Lonk and Texel breeds along with mixed breed classes for Upland and Lowland Any Other Breed which prove very popular as we can accommodate any breed of sheep at our Show.

A separate section exists for MV accredited sheep.

The climax of judging is reached via a series of Special Classes to the award of Champion Sheep, a coveted and outstanding achievement.

The YFC Sheep Section also boasts a great cross-section of all breeds found in the Hodder Valley : Swaledales, Blue Faced Leicesters and Texels. It is commendable to see over 90 entries from our young future farmers – boys and girls from 10 to 26 years old. Age and showmanship working hand-in-hand.
