The Hodder Valley Show prides itself on being a traditional agricultural and horticultural show, and a perfect family day out, with something for everyone to enjoy. Held on the second Saturday of September each year, the Show is visited by up to 3,000 people experiencing a slice of rural life in our community.
Now in its 76th year, the Show can trace its history back to 1864, and is unique in the fact that it is hosted by farmers and landowners of Dunsop Bridge, Newton-in-Bowland and Slaidburn in turn, such that no two years are the same. At each venue, visitors enjoy fabulous scenery with breathtaking views of our beautiful valley in The Forest of Bowland AONB. This year the Show is to held at Landen Holme Farm, Dunsop Bridge by kind permission of The Duchy of Lancaster and the Carr Family.
The Agricultural Section is a vibrant show case for native and continental breeds, with over 95 cattle and 245 sheep exhibited; over 60 sheep are entered into the YFC Sheep Classes alone. Prior to Show Day, local showmen hold a Young Handlers Workshop to give our youngsters - our future farmers - a valuable insight into the skills required for the preparation of stock at Show competition level. The livestock classes culminate in a fabulous Main Ring Grand Parade Finale.
The Sheep Shearing is always a great attraction, and this year will see the introduction of fun sheep events. The Sheep Dog Trials are also a big draw, with the dogs and handlers never failing to impress.
In the Horticultural Tent local gardeners, bakers, floral artists and school-children excel with their vast array of fantastic exhibits, whilst The Food Hall is bursting with delicious locally produced fare. Our popular Craft Tent is a treasure trove of gifts and local crafts.
The Main Ring programme educates and entertains, with new attractions each year, plus our ever-popular Vintage Tractors and Grand Parade. this year's Main Ring entertainment includes a Wildlife Display, Ferret Racing, Human Bar Football, Egg Catching, a Produce Auction and Sack Throwing. Musical interludes are provided by the rousing Slaidburn Silver Band, and our traditional finale encourages exhibitors and visitors of all ages to join our egg catching competition- a sight to behold!
All this is pulled together by our Show Committee, a non-profit making charity, of enthusiastic, hard-working farmers and friends who aim to provide our visitors with an insight into how our community works, coupled with a day out to remember.
